Tipid tips from newlyweds

Jun 25, 2009 by FN's Shar Bareng

weddingtipid_tips.jpgWho else can give you good tips on how to cut wedding costs but other couples who successfully did so?

After he got laid off, newspaper reporter Evan Benn, with his fiancée, decided to scrap plans of having a lavish wedding when more important matters like rent had to be prioritized. They re-examined their wedding and honeymoon budget, crossed out some items, and opted for cheaper alternatives. They ended up saving a whopping $13,000 (P628,000).

How did they do it? Here are some pointers from this budget-savvy couple.

* Use less expensive rings. Instead of getting matching expensive bands, he opted for a temporary white-gold band, while the bride wore grandma's old ring during the ceremony. This saved the couple around $8,000 (roughly P380,000). You can opt to do the same and buy your dream wedding rings when your finances could allow them.

* Order just enough food. The Benns wisely removed small items like hors d'oeuvres and chocolate-dipped strawberries from the catering menu and saved $900 (P43,000). We learned from Cheap Healthy Good food blog that serving two memorable courses instead of an elaborate wedding buffet is healthier and less expensive, yet still classy.

* Keep the after-party simple. Forget about having an open bar, as free-flowing drinks can cost you more than you expected. "We're buying our own alcohol on the cheap and renting a hotel suite where everyone can party," says Evan.
