With the price of oil rising unrelentlessly, it's time to think of alternatives. There's public transport, walking, biking and if you have the bucks, there are electric cars.

The concept has been here for a long time, however, early prototypes of electric cars were always considered clunky looking and basically "unfashionable". Tesla Motors, a start-up electric car manufacturer based in Silicon Valley, show that electric cars can match a Porche or Maserati in style. Not convinced? One quick look at the Tesla Roadster is sure to change your mind.
Apart from being sexy, it's biggest advantage is that it is 100% electric. It can go up to 220 miles after a full charge, with each miles costing less than 2 cents--a far cry from what we're paying now for gas. At the moment, the company is working on a sedan model.
With a price tag of around S100,000, it is only accessible to the rich early adopters such as high net worth individuals and politicians.
According to mercurynews.com, "the company has been showing off prototypes of the Tesla Roadster to politicians and policy-makers, including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, either at its San Carlos headquarters or on road trips to Washington."
Initially, Tesla products may only have a limited market due to its price but hopefully, it won't take long for it to be affordable to most. As downstream businesses, like recharging stations at Hyatt hotels are beginning to mushroom, our hopes for a less oil dependent mode of transportation will be within our reach sooner or later.
