News watch: LPG switch, tax exemptions, the iPhone, and budget surplus

Jun 18, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

iphone_3G.jpg* To help lower public vehicle drivers' gas expenses, the government is setting aside P1B for the conversion of diesel-run PUVS to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) , the Inquirer reports. LPG costs P30 per liter, while a liter of CNG costs P14.52, but is available only in Biñan, Laguna.

* Finally, minimum wage earners can relax a bit as Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has finally approved Republic Act 9504, which exempts those earning below P10,000 from tax deductions to their salaries. However, other income groups will have to bear with higher tax rates.

* An analyst from a UK-based research company explains that the iPhone's Asian launch and recent upgrade to 3G will actually benefit other mobile phone manufacturers who offer the same features at lower costs.

* Despite more expected expenditures on economic problems, RP's budget earned a surplus of P7 B ($159 M), which lessened the deficit from last year's P41.8 B.
