Money tip: Think before you hoard

May 28, 2009 by FN's Shar Bareng

It's true that we can save a lot from shopping at one-price stores like Japan Home Center, Daiso, and the new Saizen shop at Robinsons Galleria. After all, where else can you get kitchen utensils that cost less than a hundred bucks—and than what they do in department stores?

Yet you may end up spending more in stores like these if you're not careful with your purchases. Laptop bags, umbrellas, closet organizers, and gardening tools are good steals, but be careful about purchasing things that may actually cost less in other shops.

To avoid overspending, check prices of goods you're eying across different stores before buying anything from the nearest P88-store. Don't be blinded by the two-digit pricing.

You may also risk compromising quality in products from these stores, too. "In the case of some dollar store items, what you get is what you pay for," says the Budget Fashionista. Think twice about buying items you frequently use such as gadgets and kitchen tools here, especially if you want them to last a long time.
