How a woman earned big from saving $5

Aug 4, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

Perhaps you also had the habit of saving your coins and small bills in little boxes or jars, but have you ever thought that doing so would actually mean big bucks?

One woman decided one day to save every five dollar bill she got, and managed to earn $12,000 (roughly P528,000 with the current dollar to peso rate) in a span of three years. Marie Franklin of the Boston Globe decided to take control of her finances after reading ten tips on the internet, resolutely refusing to let go of five bucks since then.

She admits, however, that it requires discipline to save every five dollar bill she held, admitting that she gave in only once during a Mass collection. "When I decided to save my fives, I meant it, and I save every one. No exceptions," she wrote in a diary entry for the Boston Globe.

It sure does look hard, but a little effort might go a long way. You could start by saving, say, your 20 or 50 peso bill without fail. Do you think you could manage to earn as much by making peso denomination the basis of your saving habit? Let us know what you think.
