Follow Fortune's tips for keeping your job

Dec 11, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

It's hard not to get paranoid about joining the layoff statistics all over the globe these days. Just last week, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo noted that hundreds of OFWs have gotten the pink slip, and even with the slightest hint of growth, more people are expected to lose their jobs next year.

Fortunately, there are still ways to keep yourself from becoming part of the depressing statistics. Fortune Magazine listed five tips for becoming an indispensable employee at work. Based on this, it's apparently not enough to just work hard, you also have to go the extra mile in letting your employers know how valuable you are.

1. Be visible. It's not enough to do good now—you also have to make sure the bosses know how hard you've been working. But if you know that what you're doing is appreciated and noticed, don't bother, says Fortune.

2. Don't be a maverick. Yes, you have to make sure you're noticed, but it doesn't mean you have to go your own way, doing the opposite of what your employers want. Focus on core strategies. Don't lean toward unauthorized directions.

3. Manage yourself. If your boss is getting nervous and has stopped delegating new assignments, now is the best time to take on a new project or make a visible contribution, says Fortune. After all, initiative is always appreciated.

4. Network. Keep in touch with crucial contacts. You never know when they're going to be handy—especially if you do get that pink slip.

5. Don't blow off the Christmas party. You're actually lucky enough to have a Christmas party this year. If your boss made so much effort to make it happen, show your appreciation by not skipping it—otherwise, he might even take it personally, says Fortune.
