Can cosmetic surgery boost your career?

Sep 1, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

undertheknife.jpgNot all of us are into or even aim for glamorous jobs like those in the modeling or showbiz industry, where good looks are a must. Yet did you know that research has found that being beautiful can actually give you an edge in the corporate world?

An article in MSN reports that two-thirds of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery members had requests for cosmetic surgery from individuals who wanted to be competitive in the office. A cosmetic surgeon even encountered a patient who took out a loan of $25,000 just to have the procedure done.

And while one surgery is expensive enough, some people do tend to get obsessive about it. It seems that once these people had something done, they can't help but notice other things they would like adjusted or enhanced about their faces or bodies--and end up getting one cosmetic surgery after another.

Then again, it makes sense for employers to be attracted to applicants who look good, however superficial that seems, and we know from our own culture that such a claim has a certain degree of truth. How many TV commercials have we seen of girls with great hair or flawless skin getting the best jobs? And we do make an effort to look extra spiffy for job interviews.

While we can agree that not all jobs require us to look our best, we’re still curious: Would you go under the knife for the sake of your career?
