One of the statements that caught our attention in Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's State of the Nation Address (SONA) last July 28 was the P.50 per text rate for all telecommunication networks. This is certainly good news to all of us, but we've yet to experience the new rate even if the president has declared that it's already being implemented and will run until October 22. Smart Communications Public Affairs Head Ramon Isberto said they will see if they can carry the rate even beyond the promotion, while Globe questioned the government's interference with the telecom companies decisions.
Like everyone else, we're excited about the new text rates (if they will even be implemented), yet we wonder: what would happen once the promo ends and we're back to the normal P1 rate? It would definitely take some effort to get used to the rate after the rollback is over. Unfortunately, we can't keep begging the telcos to reduce the rates, which already happen to be one of the lowest telco rates worldwide.
Do you look forward to the new rate? And do you find yourself wondering why the president says it's being implemented now when text messages are still at their normal P1 rate? Would the new cut make way for other budget concerns? Let us know what you think.
