Which X-Factor judge's style fits you?

Would you be most like Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid, or Nicole Scherzinger? Take the quiz! By Belle Yambao

If you're a fan of reality singing competition American Idol, then you might be one of those people who tuned in to The X-Factor after it made its debut on US television (and local cable channels). Unlike on AI, judges on The X-Factor also serve as the contestants' mentors, guiding their group of candidates every step of their journey to becoming the first ever X-Factor US winner.

If you were a judge on the show, whose mentoring style do you think you would adopt? Would you be more like sweet Paula Abdul, blunt Simon Cowell, intense L.A. Reid, or cheerful Nicole Scherzinger? Take our quiz to find out!

1 .) It's audition time, and a contestant with an absolutely horrible voice just performed. How you do react?
  1. You tell them they sound like a cat scratching its nails against a chalkboard.
  2. You tell them they look lovely, but they're just not what you're looking for.
  3. You tell them to return next time after a lot of practice.
  4. You can't help laughing. Afterward, you just say no.
2 .) It's rock week, and one of your acts is more of a bluesy jazz type. What do you do?
  1. Give them a rock song but have it rearranged so that it fits your contestant's style.
  2. Ask them what song they'd like to sing and take that into consideration when you make your choice for them.
  3. Let them choose their own song so that you're sure they'll be comfortable singing it. You'll cheer them on one hundred percent!
  4. Give them a jazz song that just happens to be classified as rock by some music experts.
3 .) One of the contestants you mentor has a major attitude problem. How do you deal?
  1. Tell them you could have had them kicked off the show, but you're giving them one last chance to prove you wrong.
  2. Tell them you have faith in them and that they don't need to hide behind an arrogant facade anymore.
  3. Tell them not to let anyone bring them down, but caution them on their behavior.
  4. Tell them that this type of behavior can't be tolerated. They have to change their attitude, or their dreams of stardom are over.
4 .) An act has just performed, and it was okay, but you know they could have done better. Which of these comments would be yours?
  1. "Do you think that performance is worth a $5 million recording contract? I sure don't."
  2. "You look simply dazzling tonight. This wasn't your best performance, but you still did great. You're a star."
  3. "You've got an amazing voice! I can't wait to see you push your boundaries more and perform even better."
  4. "What was that? I love you, you know that, but that was a dreadful song choice."
5 .) It's the day of the first live show, and your acts are having a bout of nerves hours beforehand. What do you do to make them relax?
  1. Tell them you'll have a big night out to celebrate after they do great at the live show.
  2. Tell them everything will turn out just fine and gather them all in a group hug.
  3. Give them all individual pep talks and reassure them by telling them they're going to be great, no matter what.
  4. Take them out for a round of drinks or the best food. That always does the trick for you.
6 .) Your act has just been eliminated. What's your final comment on them?
  1. "You've got enormous potential, and I'm disappointed that my fellow judges voted to eliminate you. But, you know, this isn't the end of the road. There will be more opportunities in the future."
  2. "I know you'll do great things outside of this competition, and I will be there for you every step of the way."
  3. "You're still amazing, so never give up and never lose hope! You've got the rest of your life ahead of you, so keep working hard."
  4. "So many doors are opening themselves up to you because of this show. Take advantage of them. This won't be the last time America sees you."
7 .) Uh oh. Two of your acts are up for elimination. Which of them do you opt to save?
  1. You pick the one who gave the better performance. You know this will serve as their wake-up call for next week.
  2. You'd rather abstain. How can anyone bear making a decision that will eliminate one of their own acts?
  3. You pick the one you believe needs this opportunity more.
  4. You pick the one with more potential. It's all about how they'll do in the long run.
8 .) You're down to choosing who will take the last spot in your top three for the live shows. Which one of these would you choose?
  1. The one with the most raw talent because you know exactly how you'll hone it and make your pick a star.
  2. The one with the most adaptability. You want someone who understands the demands of the world they're entering.
  3. The one who wants it the most. You believe the people who have the most determination deserve to be in the competition the most.
  4. The one with the best recording voice, preferably in a genre you're familiar with, someone you can easily guide even outside of X-Factor.
9 .) You're watching one of your acts during rehearsal, and they seem to be having a hard time. How do you encourage them?
  1. You make sure to give them pointers afterward and tell them what they need to improve on with no sugarcoating. They'll appreciate you for it later on.
  2. You work with them until the wee hours of the morning or until you're both satisfied you've done everything you can--whichever comes first.
  3. You turn into their own personal cheerleader, complete with imaginary pompoms and impromptu fanchants!
  4. You contribute significantly to the song and stage arrangement, then make sure to sit down with them to ask how they're doing.
10 .) One of the other judges' acts just performed, and they did an amazing job. Which one of these comments are you most likely to tell them?
  1. "I can't believe I'm saying this, but you could actually have a shot at winning this competition."
  2. "You are amazing, and it's such a privilege to hear you sing."
  3. "I love watching you perform because I know that every time I see you, you'll do even better than you did the week before."
  4. "Now we've got ourselves a real competition. But my acts are still the best, of course."

Wow!!! I didn't expect to be L.A. Reid, but I do like him very much. I think he's a class act, and I enjoy watching his reactions to what he's hearing. I also like that he's also very straightforward with the contestants--his own and others. But I'm a Simonista now and forever--but just so you know, I vote for the best singer/performer, no matter who their mentor is.
