The next time you notice a video in YouTube doesn’t have any sounds, don’t be surprised. YouTube has started muting videos with unauthorized audio tracks, especially user-created videos.
Videos with unauthorized music come with a notice that says, “This video contains an audio track that has not been authorized by all copyright holders. The audio has been disabled.” It’s no wonder that mute videos get a lot of enraged comments from users. Click the screen capture above to see a sample of a video affected by YouTube’s new music copyright policy.
However, not all user-created videos on YouTube have been silenced yet, says Doug Caverly of WebProNews.
If you’ve always relied on YouTube for hard-to-find songs, maybe you should instead check authorized music streaming sites like Last.fm or Imeem for your music fix. But if you want to stick to YouTube, try searching for artists like Jason Mraz, Ingrid Michaelson, and even David Cook, who post their own music videos on the site. And if you really want to own their music, the only way is to buy them from legal sources, of course.
