Last June 24, five days after Dr. Jose Rizal's 150th anniversary, Team Manila and the Ayala Museum launched an art installation that looks back on Rizal's many travels and voyages. Balik sa Bayan Box: Travels of Rizal captures Rizal's thirst for exploration via a humble and very Filipino medium: the balikbayan box. Every Filipino traveler's favorite item became the focus of the exhibit, as Team Manila designers had silk-screened each of the boxes with Rizal-related words and graphics.
What FNites (and Filipinos, in general) can glean from this exhibit—and from Rizal—is that there is nothing wrong with yearning to see the world and discover the wonders it holds. There is nothing wrong with fueling our inner wanderlust by leaving the country to explore foreign lands. But, like Rizal, we should always come back.
