Notes from an armchair environmentalist

Jun 14, 2008 by FN Blogger Kissa Castañeda

After watching National Geographic's An Arctic Tale, I was compelled to do something to help polar bears and their artic ilk. Finding ways to do it seems quite daunting, but I realized that sometimes, simple strategies solve complicated things.

Here are five easy ways to help slow down global warming:

  1. Be an occasional hermit: Moving around consumes energy (and a lot of gas, if you drive in the Philippines) so simply staying at home can help the environment. Logic shows that if you limit your activities, you also reduce the amount of carbon dioxide you emit.
  2. Eat less meat: Cows produce more carbon dioxide than airplanes do, so if you eat less beef, you might affect the total demand for it and suppliers may just decide to produce less.
  3. Get rid of that dino desktop: Trade that space hogging desktop for sleek laptops. Why? Laptops use less power than desktops, and are better suited to this mobile world anyway.
  4. Participate in eBay: Want to get rid of anything old? Instead of just throwing it away, help it get recycled by selling it on eBay.
  5. Swap libraries with your fellow bookie: Share your book collection to other readers--it saves paper and the money needed to purchase one.
