For the longest time, Internet users detested the spread of chain letters in e-mails and social networking sites. That is, until a different kind of chain letter came along.
If you're on Facebook, you could have been tagged by a friend to do the "25 Random Things" meme, or perhaps already came up with a list of 25 random facts about yourself. The meme, which elicited answers that range from interesting to truly intriguing and sometimes funny, prompted the New York Times to get to the bottom of the viral survey.
NY Times found that bloggers have been challenging one another to write 100 random things about themselves since 2006. But 100 appeared to be intimidating and truly challenging, hence it was reduced to 25, thought Wired editor Jason Tanz.
While quite a lot of people found the meme entertaining, some protested against its "oversharing." "Anyone who wants to know 25 things about me can call me or ask me," said Telisha Bryan, a deputy copy chief at a woman's magazine.
Still, many praised the meme for breaking the ice for people who want to reconnect or learn more about their friends.
If you answered the survey, did you honestly enjoy coming up with 25 random facts about yourself? Did the list of 25 random things help people know you more? Or did you simply refuse to join the bandwagon?
