Flowers all around

Jun 19, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

What would weddings be without any flowers? If you're still at a loss when it comes to choosing your flowers and the floral decorations, these tips from Joyce Aguilar, flower designer and owner of 2171 Floral Creations, might help.

  1. Choosing your florist. Joyce emphasizes on the florist's credibility as the most important thing to consider when choosing a florist. "Clients should go to the reputable ones with businesses registered in their City Hall, with valid business permit. Experience is also a consideration, so be sure to check their works published in magazines and the web," she said. The flowers chosen should be in season and easily sourced out.
  2. What color scheme? She also recommends the monochromatic colors as the safest color scheme, but generally the colors should enhance the reception venue and the bridal gowns of the entourage. Light colored flowers go well with dark gowns and dark colored flowers work best with light colored gowns.
  3. Options for your bouquet. "We give the bride an option to go local or imported flowers. If it is imported flowers, we see to it that the flowers are in season too, so that they will not be expecting in false hope when the flowers they want does not arrive in their wedding day," Joyce says.
  4. Tipid tip! Joyce encourages brides to go local. "Use local flowers, there are many locally available flowers in the market now that are as beautiful as other imported flowers," she says. You can have roses, gerberas, hydrangeas, and celosias. Imported flowers grown locally such as liliums, carnations, lisianthus, alstroemerias, and snapdragons are more expensive.
  5. When should you order? Remember this! "If it is for entourage only, at least a month before the wedding. But if they will be needing flowers for the reception, they need to book a florist as soon as they have the specific date and venue already. Bookings we have are as early as one year ahead of the wedding date," Joyce emphasizes.
