Fireworks spotting in Japan

Aug 13, 2008 by FN Blogger Kissa Castañeda

Watching fireworks is one of those simple pleasures that the Japanese enjoy, which is most apparent during summer, when they have tons of fireworks displays.

Aside from doing so on major holidays such as Christmas and New Year, the Japanese welcome summer with this explosion of colorful lights in the evening sky. Along with festivals showcasing traditional dances like Bon Odori and Awa Odori, the Japanese look forward to the requisite summer fireworks.

Fireworks or hanabi, as it is called in Japanese, is a big part of summer in Japan. If you're one for pyrotechnic shows, the perfect time to schedule your Tokyo trip is in August. Not only will you see the amazingly lit-up skyline, there will be free fireworks to watch out for in the sky, too.
