Big John: The Life Story of John Gokongwei Jr.

While the book is primarily for children, parents can learn a lot from it, too! By Jennifer Chan

Raising your kids to become successful is a task easier said than done. For starters, how do you measure success? Is it in terms of money, power, or status?

Perhaps a look at the children’s book Big John will yield some answers. Written by Yvette Fernandez and illustrated by Abi Goy, it tells the tale of how the man of the hour "Big" John Gokongwei Jr., made his journey from being a poor boy (with not a penny to his name) to one of the most successful men in the Philippines. The story is retold in a way that would be perfectly understood by your kids, so don't be surprised if reading Big John suddenly makes them consider becoming entrepreneurs or inspires them to make something out of themselves.

The book was originally meant to be a personal gift to John Gokongwei Jr. from his kids for his 85th birthday, but the family decided to generously share it with everyone else instead. And while Big John is sure to be an enjoyable read, the real beauty of the book lies in its message on the real meaning of success. Hint: it isn’t money, power, or status.

(Big John is available in newsstands, bookstores, and supermarkets nationwide for only P125. For more details, you may visit the Summit Books website here as well as the official Facebook page here. A portion of the proceeds of Big John will be donated to the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation. Photo courtesy of Dream Big Books.)
