Want to do something completely different for Valentine's Day? Here's a trip that might literally top every date you and your man ever had! This Valentine weekend, February 12-15, watch colorful hot air balloons, paragliders, skydivers, and kites take off from Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga for the 14th Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta (PIHABF). Over 25 balloons from teams hailing from Hungary, Germany, Switzerland, France, United States, United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand, Thailand, The Netherlands, and Malaysia will join the festival.
Small private airplanes will also fly in from Japan, Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia.
The best thing you can do when you attend the PIHABF is ride a balloon, of course! PIHABF offers rides at a minimum fee of US$150 per person (approximately P7,000) on a first-come, first-served basis. You can book rides at the Information Booth upon arrival. If that's too costly, watching the balloons take flight is still remarkable. Remember to bring drinking water to the venue and wear comfortable clothes and a jacket!
Trivia: Hot air balloons were invented by the Montgolfier brothers, Joseph and Etienne, back when Louis XVI was reigning in France. Intrigued by the force that causes sparks and smoke to rise, the Montgolfiers created their prototype balloon from a hot air-filled taffeta envelope that rose to the ceiling. They held their first public demo in 1783 with a balloon that used 38- feet-long paper-lined linen, held together by 2000 buttons that rose 1,000 meters and flew over a mile. On the same year, they held a royal demonstration at the court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.
An entrance fee of P100 will be collected at the gate. Check out PIHABF’s schedule for the four-day event here.
