A shard of modernity in Shinjuku's skyline

Nov 28, 2008 by FN Blogger Kissa Castañeda

shinjuku.jpgIf buildings could speak, all those surrounding the Cocoon Tower would probably let out a sigh. That's because of how relatively new buildings around the area immediately looked dated when it was unveiled last October.

Located in West Shinjuku, a business district filled with corporate offices such as that of Microsoft and drab government buildings, the Cocoon Tower is a breath of fresh air. It is probably the only cylindrical building in the area. Apart from its shape, the Cocoon's edgy façade--which mixes glass and steel to emulate the crosses of an actual cocoon--sets it apart. Day or night, one cannot miss its majestic presence.

Its comparable features to the iconic Gherkin in the UK are obvious, but the Cocoon has one more interesting characteristic: Instead of housing restaurants and offices, it is home to a fashion and beauty school called Tokyo Mode Gakuen. Imagine how inspiring it will be to learn beauty craft in such a beautiful piece of architecture. Japan may be as modern as it gets, but this proves there's always room for more avant garde designs.
