Site-seeing: Stop wasting time on a website

May 10, 2009 by FN's Shar Bareng

Is your addiction to a website affecting your productivity at work? If you're guilty of checking Facebook during office hours, you might need to make yourself more aware of how often you update your account—in an effort to lessen the time you spend on it.

Temper your obsession with non-work-related sites through KeepMeOut.com, a tool that warns you when you visit a website more than once in an hour or less. Just type the URL of the site and how often you want to receive a warning in the KeepMeOut.com form. Then, copy the KeepMeOut-generated URL and add it to your browser's bookmarks bar.

From now on, you should click this button every time you want to visit a particular website. You still get to check the site, but you'll be temporarily blocked the next time you try doing so within the hour or minutes you’ve allotted for the warning.

It works just like an alarm clock's snooze function minus the annoying alarm sound. Soon, you can finally say goodbye to your counterproductive online distraction!
