Get the animé look with these contact lenses

Aug 15, 2008 by FN's Chrissy Icamina

Now here's one for fashion and beauty technology. You know that innocent, wide-eyed look that guys dig about Japanese female animé characters? Apparently, anyone can achieve that without surgery or the need to enter a cosplay competition!

Two companies, Geo and Dueba, manufacture extra-wide contact lenses meant to help achieve an animé-inspired appearance by giving the impression of a larger, wider iris. Lenses can even be made to order according to your prescription. So, how do these companies produce these borderline weird items?

According to the product description, there's no risk of the lenses' color running onto your eyes, as the color is sandwiched between the lenses—meaning, the outer layer of the lens touches your eye and not the color itself. The lenses have 35% to 42% water content and each measure 14mm in diameter.

The contact lenses are made in Korea, though some merchants advise consumers to watch out for imitation lenses produced in China. Each pair costs about US$30 to $50.
