eBay fined US$63 million for selling fake LV luggage

Jul 4, 2008 by FN's Chrissy Icamina

LV.jpgeBay, the most established auctioneer on the Web, was convicted of selling counterfeit goods by a French court and was ordered to pay 40 million euros (US$63 million) in damages.

The plaintiffs include luxury brand giant LVMH Malettier, which produces Louis Vuitton handbags and other leather goods, sister company Christian Dior Couture, and the perfume lines of Christian Dior, Kenzo, Givenchy, and Guerlain.

According to LVMH, despite the case having started a year and a half ago, eBay had still allowed the sales of counterfeit products on the US-based website.

Just recently, eBay was also penalized 20,000 euros for allowing the sale of fake Hermes bags on its website. eBay immediately announced that they would file for an appeal.
