Sure we love sale shopping; in fact we bide our time and restrain ourselves from buying new shoes, clothes, and bags until their prices are marked down. We raid the stores with big “SALE” signs on them, especially if they go with the figure “50%” and above.
However, in your excitement to get several items at such low prices, you may actually be spending more than you should. So remember a few things before you head out to the next midnight madness sale or scrounge among the piles of sale items in your favorite boutiques.
1. Style expert Janet Wood tells iVillage.com that you should check the sale items for the following: quality of the fabric (is the weave still tight or loose?), zipper (is it still working?), and seams (are they already showing signs of wear and tear?). More importantly, you need to honestly answer the following questions: Is it a basic staple of my wardrobe? Do I have the necessary accessories to make this new blend of colors work? Is this color or style going to be “out” in a year? If you answered “no” to the first two and “yes” to the last question, better drop that sale item you are holding. Janet suggests it is better to invest in an article of clothing you can wear twenty times a season.
2. According to Bargainsla.com, always make a list (be it mental or on paper) of what you are looking for. Get what you want first before you explore other deals. Stay focused on what exactly you are looking for at the sale. It also recommends that it is better to get to the sale well before it opens, since usually the best selections are available when the doors open.
3. The article “Shopping smart in the summer sales” tells us, on the other hand, that we must also check the stores again just before the end of the sale period, because that’s when there are possibly more price reductions, as stores want to clear their stock in preparation for next season. It also reminds us that the reason majority of the items are on sale in the first place is no-one wanted to buy them at full-price!
Furthermore, the article tells us to plan ahead by knowing when our favorite stores are probably going on sale. If you have a good relationship with a particular store, maybe they’ll tell you when they’ll have another sale. If you are unsure whether an item you want is likely to be in the sale, look for some signs: before a sale you may find that items have suddenly been grouped together differently or may have markings penciled at the back of the price ticket.
Remember these tips and prevent yourself from spending more than saving when you go sale shopping.
