Since we are on the subject of perfumes (see our recent features! Ralph Wild by Ralph Lauren, The Body Shop’s Aqua Lily and Diesel Fuel for Life), wouldn’t it be nice to keep your fragrances fresh as if you’ve just opened the bottle?
Perfumes don’t come cheap and fragrances don’t last forever. So, to get more mileage out of perfume, resist the temptation to display those pretty bottles. The constant exposure to light (including your bedroom light) and heat will speed up the deterioration of the scent. Instead, stash it away in a cool, dry, and dark place.
Now ‘cool’ does not mean you can keep your perfumes inside your fridge! Sure, chemical reactions occur more slowly at lower temperatures but humidity can cause unhappy changes in the various ingredients the perfume holds. Plus, humidity can screw up the bottle atomizer’s mechanism making it unusable or making it spray non-stop. Your kitchen (and food) will surely smell nice for more than a month.
What you can do is place your perfume bottle in an airtight container, replace it inside its box and store it in a dark closet, a seldom-opened deep dresser drawer, or (another) covered box, together with your other perfume horde. The bottle itself needs to be kept clean, so wipe with alcohol occasionally to keep dirt and dust from entering your fragrance bottle.
With a little bit of care, your perfumes can keep you smelling fabulous for a very long time!
