Makeup is an investment. That’s why you should take proper care of your makeup to ensure you get your money’s worth by enjoying desired results for a maximum period. By this I don’t mean using your makeup even when it has expired, however. You must prolong the lifespan of your makeup, yet you should also know when it is time to throw it out.
Maximize the benefits you get from your makeup by following these simple guidelines.
1. Makeup should be kept at room temperature. Avoid storing them in hot or moist places such as in your car’s glove compartment or the bathroom shelf. High temperatures can cause the pigments to break down. However, you should also never store them in too cool places such as the fridge.
2. Don't add water or any other liquid to makeup or moisturizers in an attempt to bring them back to their original consistency.
3. Always use clean makeup tools. Brushes and sponges breed bacteria from the dirt and oil they pick up from your face. Wash them thoroughly at least once a month, and wipe brushes clean with wet/facial wipes after using them. Replace your sponge if it's already too stained.
4. No need to buy special brush cleaner. You may use mild shampoo for this purpose.
No matter how vigilant you are in caring for and preserving your makeup, it will expire after a given period. To know when this would happen, always check the date when the product was manufactured. Makeup generally expire a year after this date. Liquid makeup and skin care products should also be thrown out after a year. If your makeup already has a strong alcohol smell, stop using it. For specific products, check on their lifespan below.
1. Lipstick: one to two years
2. Foundation: one year
3. Eyeliner: six to 12 months. It can last longer but make sure the tip is sharpened and clean before you use it.
4. Eye shadow: six to 12 months
5. Mascara: three months. It easily breeds bacteria.
