Backpacking 101

Apr 2, 2008 by FN's Chamie Castillo

Scarf Transformed Into a BagWith proper outfit planning, a few pieces could go a long way without sacrificing precious bag space for souvenirs and pasalubongs. Here are tips on how to pack sensibly.

* Bring only exactly what you need! We know this is hard for us girls but this is important in backpacking not just to save bag space, but to maintain a jetsetter vibe without wincing from back and shoulder aches.

* Consider where you are going. Bringing jeans is not practical on a beach getaway, plus they take too much space on your bag; it would be better if you bring two sets of swimwear instead.

* Reuse clothes. Don't get icky now, but a pair of pajamas paired with a sando is enough for a three-day, two-night vacation, provided that you are staying on a well-ventilated place.

* Bring plain and classic tops. A plain black tee is good for mountain trekking; it's easy to clean as well so you can wash and wear it the next day. A plain white razerback top is good for a stroll in the beach, add some gold accessories at night and you're ready to party!

* Use a double-duty clothing item; perhaps a scarf or a sarong. Sure it can protect you from the cold, but you can transform it into a dress, a skirt even a pouch bag. See photo on the left.

* Buy a traveling bag with multiple pockets on the inside and outside; not only can you organize everything you bring but also you can easily reach for small items (maybe your plane tickets) without opening the bag. You might want to take a look at Follow Your Heart’s latest overnight bag collection.

* Rolling is the key. Forget about folding your clothes! We've learned to roll our clothes when traveling ever since we watched The Amazing Race; here's proof that you could fit 15 clothes in a bag. With a few practice, your clothes won't even have wrinkles on it! We tried this bag in Follow Your Heart!
