No sex on the first date--even math says so

Jan 22, 2009 by FN's Trixie Reyna

no_sex_first_date.jpgLadies, time and time again, you’ve been told never to sleep with a man on the first date. If you still won’t heed us, maybe this mathematical formula will convince you.

Scientists have found that women have a better chance of finding their perfect match if they do not sleep with men on the first date, reports DailyMail.co.uk. Using a branch of math called game theory to explore dating rituals and come up with a complicated mathematical model, Professor Robert Seymour of University College London proved that longer courtship allows a woman to see if the man she’s dating is truly meant for her, as “better” partners are found to be more willing to date longer before hitting the sack.

This study, published in the Journal of Theoretical Biology, was based on common belief that women have more to lose from doing so, since they can end up with unwanted pregnancy. It perceives courtship as a continuous compromise between the two sexes that allows the relationship to grow to the point where they are both ready to have sex.

“To both sexes there is a significant cost of time [when dating] which could be spent on other productive activities. Why don't people and other animals speed things up to reduce these costs? The answer seems to be that longer courtship is a way for the female to acquire information about the male,” said Prof. Seymour.

Among other societal factors, contraception was not considered in the model, which also assumes there are only two types of men: the good ones and the bad. “A male's willingness to court for a long time is a signal that he is likely to be a good male,” said Prof. Seymour.

Be it age-old advice from elder women or more complex mathematical formulas, bottom line is for you to keep your pants on until you are sure the man you are seeing is no jerk—something only time will tell.
