Get to know the new guy--in ten minutes

Feb 1, 2009 by FN's Trixie Reyna

1107653_success_smile.jpgOne of the fun parts of dating, really, is getting to know the new guy you’re seeing: what he’s into, how he’s similar to you, how he’s unlike you, and how well he can be a potential boyfriend.

But that can also be one of the hurdles of dating: figuring out how to get to know him—the real him. No matter what you talk about and what things you ask him, a lot of the vital things are those he would never say out loud. But don’t let this make you feel blindsided. His actions will definitely tell you a lot about how he thinks and what he values—and if he’s into you, among other things.

To clue you in on exactly what to observe and what this says about him, Stephanie Booth of Cosmopolitan.com listed 55 things you can learn about a guy in ten minutes. Here’s our top ten from that list:

1. Men who opt to email or text you instead of giving you a call are among those harder to figure out, as they are careful about revealing themselves.

2. A man who likes to party may be fun to have around, but this may indicate he can take you for granted.

3. A man constantly overtaking cars on the road, cussing at other drivers, and constantly honking his horn impatiently may have an aggression problem, which, while may make him career-driven, can also make him an argumentative guy whom you’ll have a hard time handling in a relationship.

4. If he orders a meat-and-potatoes dish, he is usually “steady and dependable, but may be a little unadventurous,” says image coach Dianne Daniels, author of Polish and Presence: Days to a New Image. But if he orders exotic dishes, he’s spontaneous and easily gets bored.

5. Men who enjoy team sports like football, basketball, and baseball are usually competitive in general and like to be around their barkada.

6. Men who are the eldest in the family are usually responsible and like to take charge, while if he’s the bunso, he tends to be “creative and a little rebellious,” says Nancy Fagan, author of Desirable Men. Those born in the middle are sensitive and may need attention.

7. If he constantly checks how he looks on every reflective surface, you know he is vain, but according to Sheenah Hankin, PhD, author of Complete Confidence, it may also be a sign of a man who has the drive to succeed.

8. Avoiding eye contact may indicate you cannot trust your date, according to speech coach Diane DiResta, author of Knockout Presentations. "Meanwhile, if his eyes bore into yours as he's talking, he might be trying to intimidate you." If he looks at you like you’re the most beautiful thing in the world, you know he’s into you.

9. If he talks too much and too fast, this shows he’s lively and spontaneous, but also possibly self-absorbed. Slow talkers, on the other hand, are those who play it safe.

10. Men who smoke tend to be anxious while those who love booze may be trying to hide insecurities, says Mitchell Parks, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry at Vanderbilt University, in Nashville.
