It has been long ingrained in our social awareness that our image of the Filipino man is guwapo, macho, and swabe. Whether he has the charm of a boy-next-door or the appeal of an action star, one thing remains constant: that he must be your protector and provider in every aspect of your relationship. At least, that’s what has been traditionally accepted.

The recent years have seen the rise of the “alpha female.” Headstrong and ambitious, she loves being in the lead. More and more, we see her embodied in the women around us–students, career women, and mothers who are always on top of everything they do. Sometimes, this dominance spills over to romantic relationships, to which men respond differently. There are those who are confident enough to go with the flow of these ladies’ strength, and there are those who seem to cower beneath it and are identified as under the saya.

Having a relationship with an under-the-saya man may be frustrating, especially if you’re someone who’s looking for a person you can lean on during tough moments. You may berate him about it, but remember: if your partner is overly submissive, your way of dealing with him may have something to do with it as well. If you want help him take back the proverbial trousers in your relationship, check out the gallery below for a few things you can do on your end.
