What's the most heroic thing you've ever witnessed?

What are the most noble acts you've seen others do for their fellow Filipinos? FN wants to know! By Marianne Salazar

The Philippines has produced a number of great patriots who fearlessly risked their lives for our beloved country. We annually honor them on National Heroes’ Day, which will be held on August 26 (Sunday).

A lot of our more famous patriots, like Andres Bonifacio and our national hero Jose Rizal, are known because they gave up their lives for the country they so loved. On a more current note, modern-day heroes such as Anna Oposa (who is included in Female Network's 100 Amazing Filipinas list and known for spearheading the Save the Philippine Seas movement) and Efren Peñaflorida (who was recognized as CNN’s Hero of the Year in 2009 for bringing education within reach of the poor) likewise make us very proud to be Pinoy.

Anna and Efren may not have been able to fight in the great wars of yonder, but they still more than did their share to make the Philippines a better place to live in. More importantly, they prove that absolutely anyone can be a hero. Noble acts that prove one's self-worth, such as the many touching stories of honest security guards and taxi drivers, give us hope for the future of our country. Of course, we cannot forget the honest soldiers and policemen who risk their lives on a daily basis just to provide for their families. All these deeds serve as reminders of how admirable the Filipino race is.
