Should PNoy have bought a Porsche?

The president now owns a third-hand luxury car. What do you think of this development? Take the poll! By Belle Yambao

pnoy1.jpgPresident Noynoy Aquino just bought himself a third-hand Porsche. This was confirmed by Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda on Thursday in a GMAnews.tv report. “It's a private purchase; it came from his own funds.” But according to Lacierda, the luxury vehicle didn't come at top price. “If it was not depreciated, the president wouldn't even buy it, wouldn't even consider it.”

This news comes in the wake of a memorandum the president released last month, which prohibits government agencies from purchasing and using luxury cars. The memorandum emphasized the proper and prudent use of public funds for government vehicles.

President Aquino fielded questions in a Palace interview, in which he clarified that his transaction was private and therefore unaffected by the policy. “Hindi ho gobyerno ang nagbayad niyan. Ibinenta ko po ‘yung isang sasakyan ko at nagkataon ho meron namang buyer na ‘yun po ang ginamit ko pambayad nitong sasakyan ko (The government did not pay for that. I sold my own vehicle and there was a buyer, so I used the money to buy this [Porsche]),” he is quoted as saying.

Poll Question:
Should PNoy have bought a Porsche?
  1. Yes, of course. It’s not even brand new. At least, he bought it with his own money unlike other corrupt officials.
  2. Yes, this shouldn’t even be an issue. PNoy still has a right privacy and his personal transactions should be left alone.
  3. No way! As the president, what he did was in bad taste, especially after his memorandum on luxury cars a month ago.
  4. No. How can he buy a Porsche when his countrymen are drowning in proverty? He should put the country first no matter what the situation.
  5. I don’t care. We shouldn’t focus on this issue when our country has so many bigger problems to deal with.

Regardless if it is a "private" transaction involving his money, there is RA 6713

Section 4. Norms of Conduct of Public Officials and Employees. - (A) Every public official and employee shall observe the following as standards of personal conduct in the discharge and execution of official duties:

    (h) Simple living. - Public officials and employees and their families shall lead modest lives appropriate to their positions and income. They shall not indulge in extravagant or ostentatious display of wealth in any form.

Ang loophole ay may other income si Noynoy as a Cojuanco. But still, his primary position is being the president of the country.
