miriamSenator Miriam Defensor-Santiago expressed deep concern about the increase of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the youth. Many lack the knowledge when it comes to hygienic and safe practices for oral sex and are equally unaware of the cancer risks of unprotected oral sex.

Having several oral sex partners, not using condoms during oral sex, and having oral sex with a partner with genital warts heightens the possibility of contracting STDs or even cancer of the tonsils, tongue, and throat. The Human Papilloma virus (HPV), which can cause cervical cancer, can be contracted by men and women during unprotected oral sex, and this can lead to oral cancer.

Addressing this health issue, Santiago said that “It is imperative for the State to coordinate with health and dental associations in order to campaign against such dreaded diseases.” Santiago recommended intensifying information dissemination campaigns, saying, “The State should also create measures that will develop awareness among its constituents and strengthen the role of health centers in providing information and basic medical aid with regard to oral health care.”
