It seems that in the past few years, few laws have sparked as much cultural and political controversy as the proposed Reproductive Health Bill, or RH Bill for short. Although it covers such issues as maternal health, sex education, and the provision of adequate health care services for women, most people know it for its stand to make modern methods of family planning (and the knowledge to use these correctly) available to all.
In the past, FN has published articles on both the RH Bill and the issue of contraception, but we wanted to know: what do others think about this issue? We've seen support for it emerge increasingly over the past few years, but why do people support it as strongly as they have? We asked 15 people from various walks of life, all of whom are staunch supporters of the RH Bill, for their reasons.
Read on to learn why Lea Salonga, Angel Locsin, and more are supporting the passage of the RH Bill.
But FN wants to hear from you, its readers! Leave a comment below to share your own reasons for supporting (or not supporting) this controversial bill.

- The East Asian Miracle:
-The economic success of 6 East Asian Countries (excluding the Philippines) were attributed to: political stability ; macroeconomic stability focus on early education; an accent on agricultural development ; the establishment of a sound financial system ; openness to foreign ideas and technology ; and market-oriented economic choices. No mention of birth control.
Indeed God gave us the free will, but free will, if not properly guided, can be corrupted. It is said that the object of the will is good. The supreme good being God himself, so man’s free will is always attracted or has natural propensity to God. Evil choices arises from improper inclination to what we perceived as good. In the context of RH Bill, reducing population through the use of contraceptives, is being viewed as good since there will be less mouth to feed, while retaining the pleasures of sex thus avoiding responsibility. Everyone seems to like the idea. Unfortunately, it doesn’t mean that since everyone is ok with contraception, then its definitely right.
“Huwag kang susunod sa karamihan na gumawa ng masama; ni magbibigay patotoo man sa isang usap, na ang kiling ay sa karamihan upang sirain ang kahatulan:” (Ex 23:2)
Indeed you are responsible for your body. But as a christian, such statements is a far cry from the words of the Master: “This is my body which is given for you…”(cf. Lk 22:19)But the underlying idea from the statement is: “Katawan ko ito, walang buhay na sisibol dito hangga’t hindi ko pinapayagan, kaya gagamit ako ng pildoras para walang buhay ng mabuo sa katawan ko while I’m having sex.” The root cause is basically selfishness. An inverted form of love. REJECT RH BILL!!!
fact--we are overpopulated.
fact--there has been a growing number of unwanted pregnancies.
fact--we don't talk about sex because the church has been telling us thats it's taboo. yet almost everybody is into it-- married or unmarried.
i support the RH BILL because it will give the individual to choose and be responsible if they indeed can not stop themselves in having sex. no maams and sirs, some people can't just stop. it's reality. c'mon, how many weddings have you actually attended where the bride is already pregnant? it is not promoting premarital sex, it is 'doing something about it' because this has been happening.
i support the RH BILL because it can promote a culture of sexual health awareness and therefore not only prevent unwanted pregnancies but also the spread of sexually transmitted illnesses.
btw, if there are studies that pills and other contraceptives are harmful to the woman's health, why is still in the market? with no warnings that this is dangerous to your health?
to those who oppose this bill, let me ask this question: do you have any concrete alternative solutions as to how the government can provide better lives for millions - and counting - of filipinos?
