Macky Escalona certainly surprised people when he became part of Cosmopolitan’s Centerfolds this year: both those close to him (with that pose) and those who are wondering who he is and how he made it to the top ten.

If you were to ask Macky why he thinks he made it to the list, he’d tell you that he represents the athletes in the celebrity centerfolds list, which includes mostly showbiz personalities and “it” models. Currently a rookie for Ginebra, the current PBA champion, and a former player for the Ateneo Blue Eagles, Macky has been playing ball almost all his life. And while he has already established some sort of following among UAAP fans, he’s now beginning to appeal to a different market: that of Cosmo’s fun, fearless females.

If his sizzling photo in the Cosmomen supplement wasn’t enough to convince you that Macky Escalona is one of today’s sexiest men, you might understand better after reading his exclusive FemaleNetwork interview. Even his concept of sexy is quite different from everybody else’s.

How does it feel to be one of this year’s Cosmo Centerfolds?
For me it’s something to be proud of. Cosmopolitan is a very respectable magazine. As sexy as it might have appeared, it was tastefully done. To be part of the Top Ten for me is an honor. For me kasi, among the Ten Centerfolds, I represent the athletes. There were performers, models, movie stars.

What do you think makes you hot?
For me I always thought sexy is a state of mind; it’s not a physical thing. Sexy for me is really not showing your abs, showing your ripped body, it’s not that. I always thought that if you have a ripped body it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re sexy. What makes you sexy is the hours you spent in the gym working out, the hours spent disciplining yourself and resisting the bad foods. Sexy for me is achieving new things. What’s sexy is winning championships, what’s sexy is doing well in your profession, what’s sexy is if you’re a businessman you’re making money, if you’re a firefighter you do well as a firefighter. Really for me, sexy is being a winner in everything. It’s achieving goals and exceeding limitations.

What part of your body are you most proud of?
My brains? I’d like to think that’s the sexiest part of my body. I always believed that I may not be the most handsome person physically but if I’m going to sell myself, I may not look like a Brad Pitt, I may not have his chiseled body but just give me five minutes for you to know me as a person by talking to you, then I think I can convince you that I’m a likable person.

Will this Cosmo shoot be the last sexy thing you’ll do?
For now, I think it’s the last. This is it. The picture of the body is already there. I’d like people to judge if it’s sexy or not. But the next phase is, I’d want people to judge if my brains are sexy or not. Let the conversation, let the brain do the talking naman—while hosting and while playing basketball.

What is your ideal girl?
(Motioned to his girlfriend who was present at the interview) First off, as I said, sexy is a state of mind, so obviously my ideal girl is someone who has the brains. She has to carry a good conversation, very smart, a girl who is very principled, at the same time a girl who’s classy in her own way. Classy pero cowboy din, you get me? There has to be a perfect mix. But in the end my ideal girl really has to have that perfect mix of companionship, friendship, and intimacy.

What turns you on?
A good conversation definitely. Physically, the eyes and hair. In terms of personality, the wits but being able to balance it with humor.

How are you as a boyfriend?
You should ask my girlfriend kasi it’s subjective (laughs). But I’d like to think that I’m a decent boyfriend. I’m very committed, that’s just who I am. When I commit to something, be it a relationship, work, or family, I go all out.

How do you keep the passion alive?
As I said, I’m the type of person who puts a premium on commitment. You don’t enter into a commitment if you’re not passionate to begin with. A quotable quote for me, passion fuels dedication, and dedication fuels the commitment. It goes hand in hand; if you’re dedicated, you’re committed. ‘Yun ‘yung first step. At the end of the day, it’s how much you want it. And I want it to begin with.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in this relationship?
I think it’s friendship. At the end of the day, it all boils down to: do you share the same values, do you laugh at the same things, do you cry about the same things? It’s just really finding that person who will share that same values with you, the same principles, the same things that would make you happy, make you cry. And when you find that someone, just commit to it.

When were you told you were part of the list?
I was told a week before the shoot. At first I gave a lot of thought to it, but at the end of the day, Cosmo is very respectable, and the target market of Cosmo is different, so I’d want to venture into that.
