Is it okay to have sex during pregnancy?

May 6, 2008 by Dr. Majoe Juan Badiola

Is it ok to have sex when pregnant? Most women with normal pregnancy can still have sex during pregnancy. Love-making won’t really hurt the baby. The amniotic sac and other muscles will protect the baby. However, this won’t be possible if the mommy has clinically significant conditions. If that’s the case, abstain from sex and resort to other intimate gestures.

Just a reminder, sex during pregnancy is different. It will bring about different types of sensations. Others claim that the experience is more pleasurable, others say it’s uncomfortable. Bottomline, you will have intense sensitivity, which may add discomfort or pleasure to your breast, genitals and other erogenous zones.

Now, if you decide to have sex, just be aware of your condition. Never ever forget that you are pregnant. You may forget your dad’s name while having sex, but don’t forget that you are pregnant. Be careful, and consider a creative position that will not be detrimental to you and your baby. You may straddle your partner while he’s sitting on a chair. You may also lie side-by-side with your partner facing your back and entering from behind. As long as you are comfortable and it’s working for both of you, then consummate.

After making love it is normal to feel weird. You might have abdominal cramps during or after, but if it lasts for more than 10 minutes or does not go away, seek consult. And please for the love of the Supreme Being, be honest! Tell your doctor that you just had a blissful sex. Don’t say you accidentally sat on your husband’s finger. Because doctors should know the history in order to execute a better intervention.

What about oral sex? I say licking is fine, but not blowing air into your sexual apparatus. It can cause air embolism (bubble that gets into blood circulation), and it’s life-threatening. So if you think your partner is not an expert in oral sex, PASS! If you think your partner has oral sores, PASS! Because it can transmit diseases.

What about frequency? It’s really good to have sex because you will feel loved. But doing it a myriad times in a day is sick. Here goes the paradox of selfishness and selflessness. And remember that semen has chemical properties that may trigger labor. So if your husband thinks that he is not getting enough, tell him the pros and cons while stroking his member, it’ll make him smile at least.

What about having sex with different people? Hmmm…aside from morality issues, there is a phenomenon called super fecundation, wherein there is fertilization of more than one ovum by successive acts of sexual intercourse. And it can happen with two different males. Just imagine that.

At the end of it all, it’s your call mommy.
