Good food is good sex

May 1, 2008 by FN's Chamie Castillo

It has been said that a delicious meal is the fastest way to a man’s (and a woman’s) heart. What you probably didn’t know is that food can empower you sexually. And food has been said to have these properties for thousands of years, based on many cultures and certain studies .

Good food is good sex

Our grade school teachers and moms told us that meals rich in fruits and vegetables provide beneficial nutrients that keep organs in peak condition and energy at maximum levels. This is also true in terms of our sexual health. For example, excessive sugar, salt, saturated fat, and processed food can leave us feeling more sluggish than sexy, which eventually lessens sexual desire. The rich, delicious decadence known as chocolate contains phenylalanine, an amino acid that raises the body's endorphins known to enhance our mood.

‘Phallic-shaped vegetables have long been prized for their aphrodisiac effects’

That said, load up on antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. “They keep your plumbing clean and your cells healthy by mopping up free radicals, molecules that wreak havoc on the body in a process called oxidation,” Lynn Edlen-Nezin, Ph.D. says, a clinical health psychologist who co-wrote “Great Food, Great Sex: The Three Food Factors for Sexual Fitness.” By taking care of your body and eating well, “You’ll have a better attitude about sharing it. You’ll be more open to sensations and experiences and your sexual attitude can improve immediately.” says Lou Paget, author of several best-selling sex guides, including “The Great Lover Playbook.”

Apples, pineapples, bananas, cherries, coconut, grapes, mangoes, papayas, peaches, pears, and strawberries are only a few of those fruits celebrated in erotic literature throughout the world. Asparagus, carrots, celery, corn, cucumbers, carrots, eggplant and several other phallic-shaped vegetables have long been prized for their aphrodisiac effects.

Red tomatoes, known to be "love apples," are potent source of the powerhouse antioxidant, lycopene, was once a highly sought-after libido enhancer. The avocado, on the other hand, is undeniably sensual-so much so that the Spanish conquistadors helped spread its reputation throughout the world as a powerful stimulant.

Whichever fruits or veggies you choose, enjoy them with a new appreciation of their attributes. So tonight, feed your partner a juicy slice of mango, a delicate sliver of pear, or sweet grapes to help set the mood for a night of romance.
