10 rules of proper behavior for Facebook users

Jan 13, 2009 by FN's Trixie Reyna

facebook.jpgNo matter how much we enjoy Facebook or other similar social networking sites, we can’t deny that some people use it, either intentionally or unintentionally, to cause trouble in our relationships. We can be guilty of it sometimes, too.

These scenarios may seem very familiar to you: someone finding out that her ex-boyfriend already has a new flame two weeks after the breakup, learning that the guy who suddenly flaked out on her is in fact already in a relationship, or worse, getting dumped online—all on Facebook (or Friendster, one of its predecessors).

So don’t you wish someone came up with certain rules on how to properly behave ourselves in social networking sites? YourTango.com actually did. Spare your relationships (romantic or otherwise) from unnecessary Facebook blunders. Be responsible users and observe this etiquette:

1. Do not create a fake page just to sabotage your ex’s reputation.

2. Do not use the Facebook Wall to reveal your innermost secrets (i.e. Do not profess your long-unrequited love for someone on their Facebook Wall).

3. Know when to post something on someone’s Wall and when to send them a private message (see #2). Exchanges of intimate messages between lovers are not appropriate for the Wall.

4. Do not befriend your ex’s new flame if you’re not really friends. Nothing good ever comes out of that—especially if you have ulterior motives.

5. Do not reveal too much information on Facebook. Grievances (and incriminating photos) are best contained in correspondences with close friends, and starting “hate groups” against other people is a no-no.
