Everybody is obsessed with eating healthy, and you turn to fruits and vegetables when you’re trying to clean up your diet. However, there are times what you deem nourishing are the ones that actually sabotage your overall wellness, and even if they do grow from the ground, they unfortunately can still harm you due to unsustainable farming methods and the introduction of toxic chemicals.

A recent release by the Environmental Working Group featured “The Dirty Dozen,” a list of fruits and vegetables that are laden with pesticides. The produce included in the list have tested positive for high concentrations insecticides which use acephate, chlorpyrifos, and oxamyl – three chemicals that are bad for the body.  The “Dirty Dozen” list includes apples, celery, cherries, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, grapes, nectarines, peaches, spinach, strawberries, sweet bell peppers, and tomatoes.

Do note that the crops themselves are good for you, and it is only the pesticides used on them that you should be wary of. To stay on the safe side, you can try growing your own crops. There are some vegetables that you can plant in your yard such as peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers. For the rest, you can source them from a trusted organic market. 

Whether or not you go for home-grown or grocery-bought produce, you’ll always need to clean your fruits and vegetables. Soak them first in water and baking soda for a few minutes, and carefully wash them before consuming.
