For those of you who would like to start exercising but simply don’t have time to go the gym, a recent study shows there are alternatives you can try. One of them is to incorporate exercise into your everyday life. When you watch your favorite TV show, for example, you don’t have to spend the entire hour just staring at the screen. You can walk in place during commercial breaks or position a treadmill in front of it to use for an entire hour or until your favorite TV show is over. But just how effective is this routine?

Researchers from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville gathered 23 men and women between the ages 18 and 65 to find out. To make sure they had varied test subjects, they recruited volunteers with different body types. Some were of normal weight, while others were obese. They were then placed in different situations to test just how many calories they would burn while watching television.

Results revealed that walking in place during commercials burned an average of 148 calories, while walking on a treadmill at 3mph burned 304 calories. Sitting still while watching TV, on the other hand, burned only 81 calories.

Obviously, walking on a treadmill while watching TV is the best way to burn calories, but since you might not be used to exercising for one full hour, you can start by walking in place during commercial breaks before progressing to longer periods in the future.
