Stimulating children's appetites

Jun 24, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

orangedrink.jpgForcing a picky eater to finish his meal is a frustrating scenery during mealtimes, and one thing that parents would rather not deal with. Such mealtime difficulty often puts pressure on mothers to come up with healthy and flavorful meals that are appetizing even at the first glance, but there are also other ways of enhancing a child's appetite.

Nutritionist Joan Sumpio explains that appetite loss, which is one of the major causes of malnutrition, is actually more of a psychological condition, and can be remedied by serving the right amount of quality food. "Meals should be nutritious and flavorful at the same time, so that kids will get the right amount of nutrients they need," she explains.

If in case the meal itself lacks nutrients or if the child is missing out on nutritional values by refusing to eat, it might be wise to supplement their diet. Joan recommends serving food or drink that stimulates the appetite, such as orange juice. "A 200 ml glass of Tang's orange juice drink, in particular, contains 50 mg of Vitamin C, while the same amount of orange juice has approximately 72 mg."

Joan points out that children need at least one portion of fruit, vegetables, and juice high in Vitamin C everyday for good health, and with the availability of fruits and fruit juices in the market, supplementing a child's diet is very manageable.
