With yummy-looking treats waiting to be discovered in each aisle, it seems almost necessary to wear blinders (like those worn by horses) just so you won't be lured into splashing out on a family-sized bag of chips or a gallon of ice cream.

Of course, your wallet isn't your only concern when going grocery shopping. Your health is also of importance—in fact, it should take top priority. Who knows how many calories come in a bag of the caramel popcorn you love? Or the amount of fat that goes into that canned corned beef? Want to be smarter when it comes to choosing packaged food? Here are five things to watch for the next time you head out to the supermarket.
