5 Liberating Moments in My Life

Jen, FN's staff writer, shares how letting go of her inhibitions made her the person she is today. By Jennifer Chan

I'm not what you would call adventurous. Sure, I once wanted to become an archaeologist, and I love Rachel Weisz' character in The Mummy, but when it comes down to it, I’m more at home in front of a computer than in an Egyptian desert.

Once in a while, however, I feel like breaking out of my routine and doing something that isn’t exactly within my comfort zone, just to keep things interesting. Besides, there’s something about stripping away inhibitions that makes me feel like a brand new person. I tend to be more excited to go to work and happier with all my relationships.

Doing something different also makes me feel more creative. If you're a writer or an artist, then you probably get the same rush from doing something different. Isn't the urge to write it down or snap a photo almost impossibly hard to resist?

Of course, getting rid of your inhibitions doesn’t always mean doing something crazy. Anything that is beyond your comfort zone can be life changing one way or another. Just look at my own experiences. A theme park ride and karaoke with friends aren’t extreme by any definition, but then again, these simple things are what helped me work through some of the obstacles in my life. Scroll through the gallery to check out the top five experiences that made me step out of my box.
