Move over, heart disease.
The World Health Organization expects cancer to surpass heart disease as the global leading cause of death after WHO's cancer research agency reported that there will be an estimated 27 million new cancer cases by 2030.
According to the WHO report, cancer cases increase by one percent every year and usually in emerging economies and less developed countries. And if you're a smoker, it's not only heart disease you're risking, as tobacco was pinpointed as the major culprit for most cancers. Smoking increases the risk of at least ten cancers, with women smokers more likely than men to develop lung cancer.
The WHO report also recommends having increased awareness about cancer and provisions for effective treatments for cancer victims, particularly in developing countries.
You can also take your own measures against cancer. For one, if you're a smoker, why not quit now? You can also protect yourself against cervical cancer through vaccination, which is more affordable after GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) cut the price of their cervical cancer vaccine. Remember: prevention is ALWAYS better than cure.
