Peppermint is more than just flavoring for candy. The soothing effects of peppermint make this herb a staple in alternative medicine, primarily for easing abdominal pain.

A study by Dr. Alex Ford of McMaster University in Ontario, Canada recently showed that peppermint oil is a better cure for abdominal pains and bowel irregularities, known collectively as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Compared to other cures like antispasmodics and fiber treatments, peppermint oil (applied topically, not ingested) proved to be more effective—minus side effects.
Next time your stomach acts up, rub some peppermint oil on it instead of taking a pill. HealthNews.com lists other ailments that peppermint can cure:
* Insect bites, eczema, and other lesions. Peppermint oil can temporarily reduce itching when directly applied to affected areas.
* Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Pregnant women can drink peppermint tea as an alternative for stronger medications. Note, however, that peppermint is an herbal infusion—not tea per se, as it is not made from the tea plant camellia sinensis. Hence, it is caffeine-free and safe for pregnant women.
* Thrush (yeast in the mouth for babies). Use peppermint tea as mouthwash for babies with thrush.
