Getting more out of hip hop dance

Apr 25, 2009 by FN's Shar Bareng

Hip hop dance is one of the best workouts we can try. It keeps us fit through the exhilarating combination of cardio and flexibility exercises as we enjoy dancing to its catchy beat. It’s also an activity you can have fun doing with friends, as opposed to slaving away on the treadmill by your lonesome.

In fact, groups of girls from different colleges around the metro took their love for hip hop dance to a whole new level by joining the Nike Dance Battle. Nike gathered the funkiest all-girl college dance groups for a showdown held at the A.Venue Events Hall in Makati recently. Representatives from Ateneo de Manila University, University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, and San Sebastian College, among others showed off their wicked moves to a huge crowd of supporters and dance judges Chinnie Nepumuceno, J. Masta, and Mycs Villoso.

In the end, the Company of Ateneo Dancers proved that they owned the dance floor as their bold, daring moves bagged them the top spot. La Consolacion's Synckupado and Miriam College's Company of One emerged as runners-up.

Of course, the big dance party also highlighted the new Nike Sister Series, a collection of bold footwear that fuses style and performance. Need motivation to go to the gym or begin any personal fitness program? We suggest matching stylish sportswear with the new Nike Sister One+ and Nike Air Strong.

So if you're looking for other ways to keep fit this summer, why not try hip hop dance? Who knows, you might achieve more than a healthy body—you just might have some cool moves to show off next time you hit the dance floor!
