Eating Tomato Paste May Help You Keep Your Skin Healthy

Research shows it may protect you from sunburn and fight skin aging.

With so many beauty products out in the market, people sometimes forget that good skin care also involves a healthy diet. According to a study presented at the Royal Society of Medicine in London, consuming a diet rich in processed tomatoes protects you from sunburn and aids you in the fight against skin aging

Researchers gathered 20 women for the study and exposed them to ultraviolet rays at the beginning and end of the experiment. Half of the women were given five tablespoons (55 grams) of tomato paste with 10 grams of olive oil to consume every day for 12 weeks; the rest carried on as they usually did. The amount of tomato paste consumed was equivalent to eating a certain amount of tomato-based meals.

After analyzing the data, researchers found that the women who ate tomato paste were 33 percent more protected against sunburn. This is roughly equivalent to wearing sunscreen with a sun protection factor or SPF of 1.3. In addition, the tomato paste-eating group experienced an increase in levels of procollagen and less damage to mitochondrial DNA—both of which help against skin aging.

So if you want to keep your skin glowing, consider adding more tomatoes to your diet as part of your skincare routine. They're good for the rest of your body too.
