A few of us at the office have been obsessed with Bobby Newberry for a couple of months now. He’s an LA-based choreographer who makes these really sexy routines in a style called "jazz funk." (A hiphop friend tells me it still falls under hiphop.) You can see some of his work here. Some friends kept asking me to put together a workshop, and last night it finally happened!
I asked outgoing Company of Ateneo Dancers president Gio to teach us some Bobby-esque moves. He brought outgoing EVP Mara along to teach as well. There were 12 of us in all---mostly from the editorial department, with a few from the publishers' group and the interactive group---with varying degrees of dance experience, but all with the same eagerness to learn. First, our instructors gave us an exercise on "being sexy," which is what Bobby's style is all about. "It's not about having the right technique, it doesn't matter if you're rusty---it's about being sexy!" Gio told us. So we got our sexy on! "It helps kung nakalugay 'yung hair!” he added. If you don't believe him, then you have to watch a Pussycat Dolls video!
Next, they taught (or tried to teach us) the steps to Timbaland's "Fantasy." I loooved the choreo, but it was a bit too advanced, so we asked them to teach us their own version of "Feedback." Still highly challenging, but it was loads of fun!
Today, I think we're all walking around the office with an additional spring in our step, still a bit high from last night's workshop---and feeling sexier for it!
