Do you deprive yourself of beer for fear of that ugly beer belly?
Put your beer bloat fears to rest after scientists discovered that "beer belly" has more to do with genetics than the alcoholic drink.
While an eight-year-old research showed that heavy male drinkers put on the most weight, scientists also found that belly measurements "were randomly spread across all drinking groups." More surprisingly, men who do not drink beer at all were also most likely to put on weight.
Women, meanwhile, generally put on more weight but not necessarily beer bellies, according to the study. When they do pack pounds because of beer consumption, these were usually evident on the hips and waist only.
Despite these findings, the study discourages excessive beer drinking because of its link to overall weight gain. While beer will not necessarily cause your belly to expand, keep in mind that alcohol consumption can still cause other health problems that might be more difficult to deal with.
