To recover faster and perform your best, eat protein after your workout, suggests a study in Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism. Protein and amino acids help muscles heal, so loading up may help them build new cells and recover more quickly, says lead scientist Peter Watt, Ph.D. Down grub with essential amino acids such as eggs, chicken, and fish.

Double up to pare down: People who do both aerobic and resistance training eat less than those who do one or the other, reports a study in the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine. For 16 weeks, subjects did cardio, lifted weights, or combined the two while reporting everything they ate. Those who did double duty ate 517 fewer calories per day by the end of the study. The combo may cause a shift in hormones that control appetite, says study co-author Gregory Brown, Ph.D.

Love that sunny D: Vitamin D may lower your risk of death from disease, reports a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Subjects who took an average of 528 IU of vitamin D per day for 5 years had a 7 percent lower risk of death from cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. The hormone calcitriol, vitamin D's active form, may promote cancer-cell death, says study co-author Sara Gandini, Ph.D. So aim for 400 IU daily.
