With a lot of countries producing their versions of famous television series (Betty La Fea seems to be a favorite), it’s hardly surprising that local networks are producing versions for Pinoy viewers. Recently, there have been rumors of a local network doing a remake of the American teen drama Gossip Girl.

According to blogs reacting to the gossip, ABS-CBN will do the remake, which will star KC Concepcion as former It girl of the Upper East Side Serena van der Woodsen; Anne Curtis as Serena's best friend, Blair Waldorf, Queen Bee of the social scene; John Lloyd Cruz as Dan Humphrey, who pines for Serena; and Sam Milby as Nate Archibald, who is torn between Serena and Blair.
There are also rumors that the series will be produced neither by ABS-CBN nor GMA-7, but by ABC-5 (soon to be TV 5).
While it seems like a novel idea, we're not sure if I can stand a local version of a high-profile series like this one. For one, we're still enjoying the original version--some even take the fandom seriously, and we haven't even seen Season Two yet! Is it possible for the local version to live up to this show's name, even if the local network gambles so much money for it? Mari Mar certainly raked in big bucks and unbelievable ratings, and remakes of Korean series by the giant networks seem to be doing well, too, but that doesn't mean a local Gossip Girl would fare as much. We sense MTRCB and probably more groups will protest this; and we're not even counting fans of the original series yet.
Would you patronize a local version of Gossip Girl or protest the possibility even if it's still in the gossip stage?

I heart Gossip Girl, from the books by Cecily von Ziegesar to the TV show by Josh Schwartz (The CW). Ugh. No way. Blake was perfect as "the girl you love to hate"... KC is not that goddess-like and Anne Curtis hardly projects 'smartest girl in cl*ss'.
