Stop the drama! Local comedies are coming our way

Jul 2, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

After the tearjerker that was Caregiver and the slightly funny animated film Urduja, we were quite delighted to find that lighter Pinoy films are coming our way.

Our friends from the Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP) has some scoop on I.T.A.L.Y. (I Trust And Love You), GMA Films' newest comedy starring Dennis Trillo, Jolina Magdangal, Rufa Mae Quinto, Eugene Domingo, Rhian Ramos, and Mark Herras. According to PEP, I.T.A.L.Y. will take us through three continents, five countries, and 13 cities aboard the luxury ship Costa Magica.

Unlike other recent movies about Filipinos working abroad, I.T.A.L.Y. will show the lighter side of our OFW's lives, starting with Des Pinlac (Jolina), a hopeless romantic chambermaid of Costa Magica and Stella Sembrano (Ruffa Mae), the cruise's lounge singer waiting for Mr. Right. They both fall in love with Paolo Guzman (Dennis), who is unfortunately besotted with his Italian girlfriend, Sophia (Andrea de Lugo), but boards the ship in search of the truth about an ex-girlfriend.

While this complicated love quadrangle unfolds, senior housekeeper Lovely Mercado (Eugene) still believes in true love, as she apparently holds the key to connecting Paolo with his ex. In another side story, Phoebe Villaroso (Rhian), a spoiled, rebellious brat, falls in love with Nathan Reyes (Mark), a member of the cabin's crew.

Although the film is lighthearted, the cast admits to tearing up when they learned about the situation of OFWs while working on the film. Some of them also had seasickness from working aboard the cruise! We won't have to wait any longer as the film will be shown in theaters nationwide on August 6.

Today is also the opening day of My Monster Mom starring Ruffa Gutierrez and her mom and talent manager Annabelle Rama, who finally returns to the big screen after starring in "bomba" films 35 years ago. Annabelle is Esme, who had to give up her child, Abigail, because of her unstable way of life. After becoming a fashion stylist in New York, Abigail finally comes home to find her mother, whom she immediately clashes with as Esme shows her brash-talking, domineering "monster" side to her eldest daughter and her other two illegitimate sons.

So if you're in for laughs, why not catch up with these two comedies?
